The first immigrants

With this cartoon that is shown with the Native Americans and the pilgrims coming on to the shore, the Native Americans are asking for green cards and visas. This shows who where the first illegal immigrants were that came into this country. I know that this has been seen before but it also brings up the question of why the USA is so harsh on illegal immigrants. Yes one can say that there are laws and that it is a different time, but what is bad is some of the treatment that is received by some of the people in the country. Some say that immigrants can come in to the USA legally, but that takes way too long. If they are starving and willing to work in their own country, why should the USA look down upon them? There are so many jobs that some US citizens do not want to do. If immigrants are willing to do them why not let them do the job. Other people have said that immigrants are taking jobs away from US citizens. I don’t believe that because I don’t think that many Caucasian people are lining up to fill up jobs in the fields to harvest. How can we minimize the racism that this causes towards illegal immigrants?

In the past weeks there was a party that was being advertized on a social network sight. The party was named and themed “Vatos Lokos,” of which all students at Washington State University (WSU), should dress up in Mexican and gangster attire. It was promoting that all parties on that day should be of this theme. In the post they had pictures of what is considered to be the Mexican and gangster attire. The pictures were very stereotypical and racist. I wonder if the person was trying to be racist or if it was an innocent themed party. As a Latino student this was offensive. I wonder what the person’s motive was to think of this theme, as well as how he would have thought of it. It would be as if I would think of having a white trash or preppy party. The preppy party would consist of having people were all American Eagle or Arepostale clothing. I wonder what type of response if all of the minority students of WSU threw one of these themed parties.

Stray animals vs human, really?

In the past week there was a man named, Andy Barr, who wrote an article that compared poor people to 'stray animals.' The person that made this comparison was South Carolina Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer. This stirred up some conversation in my classes, when we talked about his article. Though the entire article I only agree with one point that he made, which was that if the person receiving government help and fails a drug test they would no longer receive help. Just because of that one statement doesn't mean that I agree with the rest of his article. It mentions that the reason that you don't feed stray animals because they will breed. This was absurd to hear. This implies that we should not help ‘poor people’ because they will breed and have more poor people. He does not take into consideration of the situations that have taken place for those people to be poor. Especially, now in days with the recession many people have lost their jobs, and consequently their means of income. If they have not lost their job the price of living has gone up extraordinarily and pay has stayed the same. Yes, one could say to cut back on spending but, what if they barely lived paycheck to paycheck? How does someone cut back then?
